The Duke Of Cleveland

If you're ever near 2 Church Walk in The Headland, Hartlepool, there's one place that locals and visitors alike keep coming back to-The Duke Of Cleveland. This charming British restaurant-pub hybrid effortlessly blends classic hospitality with a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, making it an easy choice whether you're out for a hearty Sunday roast or a pint of Guinness after a long day.

The moment you walk in, the warmth hits you-not just from the fireplace crackling in the corner, but from the vibe that feels both homey and lively. The venue caters beautifully to accessibility needs, offering a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, seating, and toilets. That means no one misses out on the experience, whether you're meeting friends for dinner or enjoying a quiet solo lunch.

Now let’s talk food, because The Duke Of Cleveland doesn’t hold back when it comes to flavour or portion sizes. For starters, the Potato Skins are a crowd-pleaser-crispy, fluffy inside, and paired with dips that add just the right punch. And if you're swinging by on a Sunday, prepare for an experience. The Sunday Roast is the real deal, especially the Roast Beef, served with all the trimmings. Tender, perfectly seasoned, and plated with mustard mash or homemade chips, it’s what Sunday dreams are made of.

But the choices don’t stop there. Their Fish & Chips-which comes gluten-free-is a standout, crispy without being greasy, and served in a portion that satisfies without overwhelming. Craving something richer? The Steak Mushroom and Ale Pie with homemade chips is pure comfort in a dish, balancing savoury meat with buttery pastry and earthy mushroom notes. And for something with a twist, the Sous Vide Pork with Mustard Mash is a delightful modern take that feels both refined and rustic.

One of the surprises? The Chicken Parmo with Chips. A North East staple, it’s done here with crispy breaded chicken, rich béchamel, and golden melted cheese-topped off with a side of hot, crunchy chips. If you're more into handheld options, the Beef Burger and classic Hamburger tick all the boxes: juicy, well-seasoned patties, toasted buns, and fresh toppings that actually taste fresh.

And for dessert? Don’t even think of leaving without trying the Fried Ice Cream-a perfect mix of crispy, warm outer shell and cool, creamy center that’ll make you question why you haven’t tried it sooner. If you’re feeling fancy, pair it with a Latte or choose from their great tea selection. Honestly, the coffee and tea offerings alone are worth the visit, but the real kicker is how well they pair with every stage of the meal.

Beverage-wise, The Duke Of Cleveland really flexes its muscles. The beer selection is top-notch, whether you’re after a cold pint of Guinness Draught or browsing their cocktail and wine list. They’ve even got organic and vegan options for those keeping it clean. From gin to spirits, from a simple quick bite to a private dinner in their exclusive dining room, the range here is impressive without being overwhelming.

Live music nights give this spot a touch of theatre, and if you’re into sports, the screens inside make it a great place to catch the match while enjoying a steak pie and chips. Outdoor seating is available too, perfect for those rare sunny days in Hartlepool.

Whether you’re craving a Scampi and Chips meal in the sun or tucking into a plate of Hunters Chicken with friends by the fire, The Duke Of Cleveland brings comfort, flavour, and experience together in a way that makes you want to return-again and again.

Four of us dropped in unplanned and unbooked on Friday evening and what a great chance encounter. The owner met us at the bar and when we said we didn't have a reservation he said he had on spare table and was really friendly and welcoming. It was a bit odd at first as there was a local band on (Electric Sheep and they were excellent) but the place is very much set up for dining. Once I got over this and we ordered food we all had an absolutely brilliant evening. The food was good and reasonably priced. Lovely old pub with a lot of character (and characters) and the evenings entertainment was fabulous. First time visiting but will definitely look out for more band nights as this was the best night out in quite a while. Big thanks to the manager and all the staff for making room for us and making us feel welcomed.

The scampi and homemade chips with minted peas at Duke of Cleveland pub in the Headland in Hartlepool were absolutely lovely. The staff were professional and polite, making me feel like a VIP. The toilets were clean, and the decor and atmosphere were great. Highly recommend checking this place out if you're in the area!

Very quiet dining room, lovely wood burning stove. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Good was utterly amazing - freshly cooked, so don't expect it on the table in 5 minutes. Staff apologised for the wait, but honestly I'd much rather wait 20 mins and get freshly cooked hot food! Pork belly was delicious, Parmo very good, and homemade chips were just stunning. Will definitely be back.

Had a meal last night after a day at the Tall Ships, service and food was amazing. Large portions, very tasty and all of our party were impressed! My daughter can be fussy but commented ‘the pizza was better than great, never had a pizza so good’ which believe me is very high praise. We’ll definitely be back soon.

We enjoyed another excellent meal at the Duke of Cleveland. The staff although busy were friendly. The only disappointment was after we had finnished our main meal, we could not order dessert as the kitchen had closed at 8.00pm. We booked for 7pm so I would advise to book well before then, as this has happened to us twice.
